About the Grayslake, Illinois Area   Overview
Our charming historic downtown is decoreated in antique lighting, historic storefronts with varying architectural styles, and small businesses with a customer friendly atmosphere that will warm your heart. At our village center there is something for everyone, from our new family aquatic center to the new senior center to the library to our central park! Is there a lake in Grayslake? Yes! Our village is the home of Gray's Lake, a wonderful 78 acre recreational lake! (Read our history below.)
Our population is a nice size of around 20,000 inhabitants. We are a youthful, educated, and hardworking people. The average age here is 32, over 50% of us have a bachelor's degree, and our median household income is around $88,000. Job growth here is positive! Over the years, 2000 to 2006, it has risen by 12%. We also have excellent access to health care and quality education.
We are proud to have as our motto - open space is, and will be, the largest land use in Grayslake! We have approximately 3,500 acres of open space and environment protection areas. Some of our open areas include Almond Road, Brae Loch Golf Course, and Rollins Savannah forest preserves, the Libertyville Prairie Conservancy Conservation Area, and hundreds of acres of community parks. Transportation
Travel from Grayslake, Gurnee or Vernon Hills is a snap by either car or public transportation. To get to the Loop, commuters take either the I-90 or the I-94 for a 50-minute trip. O'Hare International Airport is a 40-minute trip alont I-294. If you prefer to leave the car at home, Metra's trains and busses are a comfortable way to get around. Once you're in the city, the CTA will take you anywhere you need to go.
History
The land of Grayslake was initially settled by William M. Gray in 1840. In 1842, Mr. Gray purchased his claim to the area today known as Gray's Lake. A community began to form in 1886 when the Wisconsin Central Railroad, building a line from Chicago to Wisconsin, erected a railroad station and called it Grayslake. Almost ten years later, in 1895, the village of Grayslake was incorporated. From there Grayslake grew slowly, serving the needs of area farmers and then relocating Chicagoans. The rest is history!
